According to a Facebook post from the Town of Beloit Police Department, they have been receiving an increase in online fraud reports occurring in their jurisdiction. Multiple victims have reported receiving messages on their computers stating that their system has been hacked, their private information compromised, and illegal files being downloaded onto their devices. These scammers then claim to be “federal agents” and then request that the victims pay off their “fines” over the phone using gift cards and/or going somewhere to send a digital cash disbursement. They have taken thousands of dollars from each of their victims. These scammers are seemingly using faux phone numbers from a variety of different locations around the country to communicate with their victims, but the police department believes they are actually operating outside of the US. This makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for local law enforcement to track and prosecute suspects in cases like this. They also seem to be targeting the elderly population, who tend to be more susceptible to internet scams like this. The Town of Beloit Police Department recommends reaching out to family and friends you believe could be victimized and remind them that no law enforcement agency, whether it be local, state, or federal, will ever request that you pay a fine over the phone using gift cards or money wires. If you receive a message such as this, do not engage with it, call any phone numbers provided, or open any files they may send. If you are ever unsure, you can always call non-emergency at (608)757-2244 and the police department would be more than happy to assist you.
