The City of Janesville is reminding residents of products that might be hazardous to sewer systems. The city says they have had numerous incidents of materials such as wet wipes and other non-flushable items being snarled in the sewer system. These materials get stuck to grease and create blockages in the system. If these remain undetected they can lead to large main breaks or backups and create costly repairs. A full list of items that can not be flushed is seen below:
Any kind of wipes
Vitamins
Medicines
Food or candy packaging
Toilet cleaning pads or solid products
Napkins or paper towels
Dental floss
Greases, fats or oils
Feminine hygiene products
Contraceptive devices
Cloth items
Bandages
Plastic materials
Kitty litter
Any inorganic material
The city says the only two items that should be flushed are paper and waste. Other items such as antifreeze must be disposed of in accordance with state, local and federal regulations. Residents are also reminded to drop those off at a clean sweep collection site. That website is seen here: https://www.co.rock.wi.us/land-conservation-clean-sweep
For dropping off prescription pills, you are encouraged to visit here: http://www.janesvillewi.gov/departments-services/police/community-services-division/prescription-pill-drop-off-program
Additionally, residents are asked to call 608-755-3120 if there are any questions.
