Fort City Council Discusses Public Alcohol Ban Ordinance

wsld77

At the City Council Meeting on Tuesday night, Council members addressed the third reading of an ordinance to create Section 58-76(d) of the City of Fort Atkinson Municipal Code, which would prohibit the consumption of alcohol on city streets and sidewalks.

According to Council members Mason Becker and Megan Hartwick, the public seems hesitant to adopt this ordinance. Some expressed that it was being seen as a matter of personal freedom, prohibiting well behaved citizens from having a beer with their evening walk or downtown fishing trip. Police Chief Adrian Bump informed the Council that the Police are mainly concerned with public intoxicants in the downtown and Riverwalk areas.

The Council decided the ordinance needs more specificity to better serve the public and delayed its approval to a fourth reading in the future.
