On Monday night, the Whitewater Unified School District School Board convened for a meeting. The meeting covered a wide variety of topics in its hour and a half runtime, from middle school academic goals to the resignation and hiring of multiple staff members.

During the meeting, Superintendent Caroline Pate-Hefty gave a short report. In this report, she talked about the success of Madagascar Jr., the first in-person play held since the pandemic, which ran from July 8th through July 10th with 45 students involved. She also showed the new raised garden bed at Lincoln Elementary, which made gardening far more accessible to students in wheelchairs.

The Superintendent also gave some information on the start of the next school year. August 10 and 12 will be picture and registration days for WUSD, with student pictures being taken at this time. It was also noted that September 1st will be the first day of school for 4K through 6th grade, and high school freshmen only. All other grades will begin class on September 2nd. Following the superintendent’s report, budget variances were presented and explained to the Board, covering savings and expenses in multiple things such as dental plans and substitute teacher expenses.

One of the last items for the evening was a proposal for the board to approve the payment for a keynote speaker, Hector Montenegro, to help the district’s educators learn how to update their teaching methods to reach a more diverse student base. The payment was approved.

Before adjourning for the evening, the Board briefly discussed moving future meetings back to a public setting, possibly moving away from Zoom calls sometime soon.
