According to an update from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection, Rock, Walworth, and most of Jefferson County will soon be getting traps for spongy moths. The traps measure population levels, and will be set in May and June and will be checked June through August. The traps will be removed around August or September. Traps contain a plastic strip coated with pheromone, or the scent of the female moth, and are coated inside with a sticky substance. Males fly into the traps looking for a mate and become stuck. Traps catch only male moths. There are two types of traps. Delta traps are set where numbers are expected to be low, and can only hold 20 moths. Milk carton traps are set where numbers are expected to be high, as they can hold up to 1.5 thousand moths. If you see a trap, do not disturb it. If you see a trap laying on the ground, call the number written on the trap to report it.
