School District of Janesville Shares Student Academic Growth

According to a press release from the School District of Janesville, the State of Wisconsin released data on the results of the 2021-22 Wisconsin Student Assessment System (WSAS), which is the required tests used for state and federal accountability purposes. The data comes from the Wisconsin Forward Exam and the ACT Exams. The results from these tests are some of the components used to generate the school and district report cards, which are expected to be released later this fall.

On the Forward Exam, all Janesville students in grades 3-8 increased in the number of students proficient in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math from the 2020-21 to the 2021-22 school year. Students in 5th grade had the highest increase in proficiency with an 8 percent increase in ELA, and a 9 percent increase in math. Students in grades 3-5 were at or above the state average in ELA, Math, and Social Studies, and slightly below the state average in Science in 4th grade.

The middle school students were at the state average in ELA in grades 7-8 and below the state average in math and science. Nearly 53 percent (52.8) of Janesville 10th grade students scored proficient or advanced in Social Studies in 2021-22, up from 43.3 percent the prior year, and slightly above the state average of 52.2 percent.

The ACT results for the School District of Janesville also show an increase in English, Reading, Science, and overall composite from the 2020-21 to the 2021-22 school year. The overall ACT results were slightly below the state average in English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Writing.

The Forward Exam is given to all students in grades 3-8 and grade 10. In grade 10, the students are only tested in Social Studies. The ACT Exam is administered to all students in grade 11. A small percentage of students with significant cognitive disabilities took the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) as an alternate exam to the Wisconsin Forward or ACT.

The WSAS is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards, which outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career-ready. The Wisconsin Forward Exam is a computer-administered assessment and includes multiple-choice questions and short answer questions.

See the charts for more below for visuals of how Janesville students performed this year compared to last year and compared to the rest of the state.
