According to a press release from the Rock County Public Health Department, officials are reporting that conditions are right for Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, to be showing up in local waters. They have recently observed blue-green algae in the Rock River and Lake Koshkonong. The public health department recommends avoiding swimming in areas with high algae concentration, not swallowing pond, lake, or river water, and rinsing off after coming in contact with pond, lake, or river water. Symptoms of exposure include skin or eye irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, or cold or flu-like symptoms.
