During last night’s hours long Rock County Board Meeting, the board spent a large amount of time discussing an amendment to a resolution regarding snowmobile grants.
Recently, a snowmobile club called the Sundowners, broke away from the Rock County Snowmobile Alliance and was requesting its own grant from the DNR to help fund 47.8 miles of trail that it owns. The grant would provide the club with $67,000 to fund the repair and upkeep of those trail lengths. There was an extremely lengthy but spirited discussion regarding why this was necessary, with some supervisors adamant that they cannot support the resolution. One supervisor made a motion to kill the entire amendment with a new amendment forcing the Sundowners to rejoin the Alliance, but Administrator Josh Smith said that was not a valid possibility. Some supervisors were under the impression that the county was funding the club, but were again informed that this was a DNR grant. Supervisor Wayne Gustina had the quote of the night describing his frustration with the length of the talks.
“This has gone on for way too long. I’m going to use the acronym, KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid”. He voted in support of the amendment.
The Sundowners essentially had no money and were simply seeking a contract to be part of the repair. After a nearly 90 minute debate, with 30 additional minutes of Sundowners speaking in public comment before, the board voted 17-8 to approve the amendment allowing the Sundowners to receive the grant and include the miles for state funding. 4 board members were absent.
