New information has been obtained regarding yesterday’s house explosion in eastern Jefferson County. The Rome Volunteer Fire Department has confirmed that one person died in yesterday’s blast on Water Street, and the individual was a beloved former fire chief of the small town department. No other information on the chief’s identity was provided, but the department said they would be going out of service until 4 PM today to mourn the loss of the chief. Other departments in Jefferson County will step up and cover Rome’s district. The American Red Cross is assisting those who needed to leave their home after the explosion and stayed on the scene until around 8:15 Tuesday night. A shelter was also opened at a community center in Sullivan for those who needed it. More information will be provided when it is available.
