According to an update from the City of Janesville, City Council has voted to increase the City’s local vehicle registration fee, commonly referred to as the “wheel tax” from $20 to $40, effective January 1 of 2022. The fee is a charge collected by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation on behalf of municipalities when an owner registers a vehicle. This fee applies to all autocycles, automobiles, and trucks under 8,000 pounds registered in a municipality. The City utilizes revenue generated by the charge to partially fund the Street Rehabilitation Program. If you have any questions on the wheel tax, contact the City of Janesville at (608) 755-3000.
