City of Beloit Prohibits Large Scale Commercial Animal Breeding

On Monday evening at the Beloit City Council meeting, the council voted to create section 15.155, amending section 15.30(1) of the Code of General Ordinances; prohibiting large scale commercial animal breeding in the city. The City Council held a recent workshop where they discussed the concept of a local ordinance prohibiting the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits for a profit due to inhumane, large-scale commercial breeding operations. In Illinois, statewide regulation prohibits commercial sale of dogs and cats, and the City of Beloit could have been a new location for unregulated breeders with hopes of accessing the community where they reside and their neighboring states. Currently there are no such businesses in Beloit, and this ordinance prohibits them from coming in the future.
