UPDATED: Officer Involved Shooting in Jefferson County

The Department of Justice has taken over the investigation of Wednesday's incident in Jefferson County that ended with in an officer involved shooting. According to several sources, the WI State Patrol attempted a traffic stop on Highway 26 between Watertown and Johnson Creek around 12:30 PM. The driver of the vehicle let a passenger out. The passenger was apprehended, and the driver fled the scene. During the pursuit, authorities tell sources that shots were fired at police by the driver. Spike strips eventually stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Highway 26 and Highway 12 in Fort Atkinson. That's where the suspect exited the vehicle carrying a handgun and eventually attempted to carjack another vehicle. Three officers fired shots, striking the suspect. Medical efforts to save the suspect's life were unsuccessful. No other injuries were reported. As is policy, the officers involved in the shooting were put on administrative leave until the investigation is complete. The DOJs Division of Criminal Investigation will turn the investigation report over to Jefferson County once it has concluded
