Lake Geneva City Council to Reconsider Domestic Violence Shelter

A proposed domestic violence shelter that was voted down last summer will come back before the Elkhorn city council for another vote. The city council has scheduled a meeting for June 29th, 5:30pm at Matheson memorial library and the meeting is open to the public, the meeting was moved to the library to accommodate a crowd. The council voted 4-2 to deny the permit for the New Beginnings shelter but a Walworth county judge ruled that the action was improper because no factual basis was given for rejecting the shelter plan. The group who helps victims of domestic violence needs a city permit to move into the former medical clinic on N Church st. The shelter has had support from law enforcement and social services but some residents opposed it out of fear that it would bring domestic violence perpetrators to the area. The site is being donated to New Beginnings by Aurora health care.
