Janesville Police Officer Injured by Suspect Being Arrested for Domestic Violence

According to an update from the Janesville Police Department, yesterday at about 9:40 a.m. 34 year old resident Ryan C. Montcalm was arrested on charges of suffocation and strangulation domestic violence, resisting or obstructing an officer, causing substantial injury to a police officer, and misdemeanor bail jumping.

In this incident, officers were sent to the parking lot of an apartment at 200 N. Jackson St. to investigate a possible domestic disturbance occurring in a vehicle. When officers arrived, they located the vehicle and began speaking to the occupants. It was then determined that Montcalm would be arrested for suffocation and strangulation domestic violence. As the officers attempted to arrest him, Montcalm resisted and began fighting with officers. All went to the ground. A taser was going to be deployed, but it was suspected Montcalm had a medical condition and pepper spray was used instead. He remained uncontrollable until other officers arrived.

Janesville paramedics were summoned to the scene to help control Montcalm and address his medical needs. After the incident was concluded, one of the officers had sustained a back injury during the fight and was taken to the hospital via ambulance for treatment. While Montcalm remains at the hospital for treatment, the officer was treated and released but remains off of work.
