According to an update from the City of Janesville, in 2021 the city located high occurrences of spongy moths in Lustig park. If uncontrolled, the caterpillars can significantly impact the health and longevity of the trees. To best control the spread of these moths, the Janesville Parks Division sprayed horticultural oil on egg masses at Lustig Park in the fall of 2021 to prevent hatching.
The division will now begin an aerial application of the horticultural oil to control hatched caterpillars in the upper canopy. Aerial spraying will be done by helicopter in two applications between April and July, depending on weather conditions. Lustig Park will be closed for a portion of the day following spraying.
If you have any questions on this project, call the Janesville Parks Division at (608) 755-3025.
