Elkhorn Man Arrested For Stealing Fire Hydrant

An Elkhorn man is facing charges after stealing a fire hydrant earlier this winter. According to the LGRN, a car was discovered disabled in a ditch in Lyons back on January 16, and made contact with 19-year old William Rice of County Road ES in Elkhorn. Officers then located a fire hydrant in Rice’s vehicle, which Rice claimed he purchased from Facebook Marketplace. Rice’s car was damaged, which he told police he suffered when he hit a pillar at a trailer park. After a second meeting on February 4, Rice told police he hit the fire hydrant in Elkhorn while driving in a blizzard and had taken it as a result. A fire hydrant reportedly costs a little less than $3000. Rice is charged with felony theft of movable property, and misdemeanor of obstructing an officer.
