The Elkhorn City Council met at around 5:55 PM on Monday night, after a Legislative committee meeting that started at 5 PM ran long prior.
The City Administrator James Heilman announced during his report that he intended to retire in April 2022 to focus on his health. This was previous than the 2024 term that he had committed to. A hiring firm has been notified and the City was told not to start anything until after the holidays, and the City will still have plenty of time.
“A firm for the City administrator is the proper way to go", Heilman said.
The plan is to bring in several candidates to properly vet and make a decision from there.
The board then discussed an ordinance to amend the ward boundaries. This was a first reading that could not be waived and is the standard Ten-year Census re-draw that is law.
The new drawn lines have been shrunk from 8 wards to 7, but there was no population loss as there was no population in Ward 8. Ward 5 enveloped Ward 8. The maps are not done, and there was a shortened timeline. The maps are due by the 18th, which is when the council will vote on it. It might not be known until April if the County changes anything. The first reading was approved.
The board then followed up with a discussion of the Aldermanic Districts which was quickly passed to first reading without discussion.
The next meeting in Elkhorn will be the budget meeting on Monday, October 11.
