According to a press release from the City of Janesville, the Wastewater Utility participated in a Coronavirus wastewater monitoring program that provides additional COVID-19 data for the city. Current recent data suggests that there are more people currently infected with COVID-19 than the number of PCR confirmed tests that are reported in the official Rock County Public Health Department dashboard. The release also stated that trends in wastewater findings can inform or signal potential changes in the number of people who test positive for COVID-19. The City of Janesville’s Wastewater Utility has been a part of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Coronavirus Wastewater Monitoring Network since September 2020. Samples of the Utilities wastewater are collected twice weekly and are sent to the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene. The State then tests these samples to determine the amount of COVID-19 present in the community. The Wastewater Monitoring data is reported on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services website.
