To acquire Tree City recognition, the Arbor Day Foundation requires a community to meet the program's four core standards of sound urban forestry management, which include:
Have a tree board or department
Keep a tree care ordinance
Maintain an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita
Hold an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
