City of Beloit Praised for Powerhouse Project
The City of Beloit is being honored for its Powerhouse project. According to a Facebook post, the city, along with Beloit College, were honored with the Best Public-Private Partnership in Revitalization for the project. The Powerhouse Project is a $38 million project to turn the old generating station into a student center, which would include a pool, fieldhouse and indoor track, as well as a fitness center, and event, meeting and classroom spaces. There is also plans for a 160 person lecture hall, a cafe, and decks that overlook the Rock River and the Riverfront. An additional $500,000 was contributed to an 800-foot riverwalk behind the student center. The older electric power was removed from the facility, but the smokestack will remain, albeit dormant.
