Authorities Continue Search for Missing Girl
Authorities were still not able to locate the 9 year old Janesivlle girl who went missing in the Rock River last Thursday night. Police said Madison Billups was thought to be holding onto her 13 year old brothers when they waded into the river on a sandbar near west of the Monterey Bridge. Two bystanders fishing nearby saw Madison and her brother slip off the sandbar and onto large rocks in a drop off where a strong current and undertow sweeps out of the river’s main channel. One of the bystanders tried to pull them bothe from the current but Madison slipped away and went under in the current. Dozens of searchers have canvassed waters for more than 60 hours on and off since Thursday night. Multiple fire departments and other police on Sunday continued a sonar search from boats in a 9 mile stretch of river between Janesville and Beloit. Boat crews with divers and cadaver sniffing dogs were dispatched over the weekend first searching near Angler Park where Madison was last seen then expanding to deeper waters farther south. Searchers even ordered the dam shut at Indianford to draw down the river so divers could search the bottom of the river more safely, they were able to measure the undertow near where Madison was last seen and it goes more than 7 miles per hour. The Rock County Sheriff’s Office said they will continue to search Monday.
